Ana Ljubinkovic is one of this season’s Fashion Scout Ones To Watch award winners. The Serbian designer graduated from the University of Belgrade in 2002 with a degree in painting, and her visual roots have taken her on a creative journey experimenting in textiles, colour and form. Her SS17 collection is heavily inspired by the dolls in Jan Svankmajer’s short film “Jabberwocky”, George Melies “The Impossible Voyages” and Wilhelm Reiches cloudbuster machines. The culmination of all this inspiration is beautiful doll-like garments with kitsch, contemporary features in sculpted, uniform silhouettes.
Best described as an urban couture collection, Ljubinkovic‘s extravagant pastel structures of the garments hint at couture fashion, despite the designers intentions for the clothes to be a part of the modern woman’s wardrobe. It’s a stunning mixture of sickly sweet aesthetics, accentuated waists and daring cutouts creating candy coloured uniforms and stunning silhouettes, highlighted further by the models sporting matching garrison hats. Giving a 50’s vibe, meets diner waitress if she was super fashion forward girl, the uniformity of the SS17 collection is both fun and playful.
