H&M x Kenzo first announced their collaboration back in May and have just teased us with three looks from the much anticipated collaboration. The released images gives us a first glimpse of the pending launch, with the pieces featuring bold prints and bright colours – a staple of Kenzo designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon’s signature design aesthetic. The lookbook images have been shot using a variety of young creatives as models, including Amy Sall an activist and founder of SUNU: Journal of African Affairs, Critical Thought + Aesthetics; artist and poet Juliana Huxtable; musician Oko Ebombo; and make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench, who is also a member of the London-based collective Theo Adams Company.
When the news of the collaboration was confirmed in May, design duo Lim and Leon said that they wanted to “think big, push the boundaries and bring the new energy of Kenzo to everyone around the world.” For now, the world will have to wait as the full lookbook will not be released until later this year, but from what we’re seeing we’re already in love with the innovation and direction Kenzo x H&M have taken.Late last year, Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing told Newsnight: “We can’t forget, but fashion is sometimes defined as a white world … I love showing reality on my catwalk and I think we are going back to that.” The lack of diversity in the fashion industry is a unending issue and Kenzo x H&M’s new campaign clearly portrayed the “reality” Rousteing spoke of.
