When Beyonce released the trailer for her second visual album “Lemonade” in early April, fans were super excited to watch the full album. This short trailer was a glimpse into what was to come. Narrated by the singer herself, it was packed with a variety of subtle visual images of several clips from the videos within the upcoming visual album. The overall theme of the trailer was dark and mysterious yet thrilling. It was a new dark side of Beyoncé most fans hadn’t seen before. We were not kept in suspense for too long as “Lemonade” was finally released into the world on Saturday the 23rd of April 2016.
The majority of Yoncé fans and supporters were elated about the new videos and overall the album has been a huge topic of conversation since its release. Although few people have powerfully voiced their opinion about the album, Filmmaker Matthew Fulks has gone to the length of filing a lawsuit against the singer.
The latimes.com reports An independent filmmaker filed a federal lawsuit against Beyoncé on Wednesday alleging that ideas from his 2014 short film were used to create the trailer that accompanied her new visual album “Lemonade.” The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, points to nine instances — about 39 seconds of the 65-second trailer — that Fulks says are visually similar. The “Lemonade” trailer is “substantially similar” to Fulks’ film, including a similar mood, setting, pace and fonts, he says in the lawsuit.
It’s been reported that the Crazy in Lover singers team have not yet responded to this allegation. Well I think it’s fair to say imitation is the highest form of flattery. In this instance who knows and who even cares if Queen Bee’s trailer is “Similar”. It’s a great form of visual art and one should be honoured that they have managed to inspire someone of Beyoncé’s calibre.
