Fashion Drama to Become Amazon’s First Original UK Series

Amazon has finally commissioned its first original UK drama series in the form of The Collection. The producers of the up-and-coming show, Lookout Point, have already had a long line of successful television shows, most notably the BBC epic adaptation of War and Peace. The Collection was created by executive producer Oliver Goldstick, who is best known for his work on Pretty Little Liars and Ugly Betty. The 8 hour-long episode series takes place in 1949 and follows the story of an illustrious Paris fashion house in the aftermath of World War II.

Chris Bird, film and TV strategy director of Amazon Video UK said: “We’re delighted to be bringing such a smart, sophisticated period piece to Amazon Prime members in the UK. We aim to bring our customers the best international TV has to offer, and we’re sure our members will enjoy this window into the seemingly glamourous world of Parisian haute couture, perhaps hiding a more sinister undercurrent.”

The show has lined up an incredible television crew including casting director Rachel Freck (The Go-Between, Life in Squares), Emmy-winning director Dearbhla Walsh (Penny Dreadful, The Tudors), BAFTA-winning producer Selwyn Roberts (Parade’s End, Strike Back), production designer Alison Dominitz (Casanova, Hotel Splendide) and costume designers Chattoune & Fab (Dheepan, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky).

Goldstick has described The Collection as a “passion project” of his. “I’m thrilled to be working with this fantastic team,” said Goldstick. “[It’s] an entrepreneurial fable set in a pivotal moment in history, where fashion served as the ultimate vehicle for transformation and re-invention. It’s the story of a war-scarred family — upstairs and downstairs — tethered together by its success and its secrets.”

Anne Thomopoulos (Rome, Borgia, Versailles) and Kate Croft (Murderland) will join Goldstick as producers, whilst Pascal Breton of Federation Entertainment has been signed as French co-production partner. Croft, who created The Collection alongside Goldstick, said that the show is full of his “signature flourishes” and has an “extraordinary vision” of the golden age of couture. “His unique take means we get to peek behind the elegant facade and realize it is not just about the dresses, but more about what they are covering up,” Croft added. The series has already begun filming in Wales and Paris, and is due to air early next year for all Amazon Prime customers.
